te eke advocates for the the use of indigenous frameworks and embraces whakapapa (connections) to create authentic interwoven mahi.
making from what lives closest - what they know, what they inherit, and what continues to shape them.
te.eke works as part of kauhangaroa, an art collective based out of tāmaki makaurau that consider expression of art and culture as an essential component of identity and collective hauora - health and wellbeing.
Kauhangaroa, a red-lined variety of harakeke, carries the memory of first beginnings. Its edges hold the colour of Papatūānuku, the Earth Mother—the deep red of kokowai from which Tāne Māhuta shaped Hineahuone. That earth clung to his hands, refusing to be washed away, as though the land would always claim its maker, and those who came after. We carry that same stain: not a mark to erase, but a reminder that the earth lives beneath our skin, and we belong to her.
